Trump Fatigue? He’s Just Getting Started…

We are not so sure we are disappointed that Trump “won” the Republican, uh, debate last Thursday night. Because it did lead to a number of great pieces that are helping us Lumpens decypher the surreal and head scratching spectacle of this coming election cycle and the Republican Cialis commericial.

Mike Whitney writes Trump’s Triumph: Billionaire Blowhard Exposes Fake Political System on Counterpunch that the “Presidential Debate Extravaganza featured the most riveting two minute political exchange ever heard on national television.” and goes on to provide a transcript of Trump’s exchange between him and FOX News Brett Baier.

BAIER: Mr. Trump, it’s not just your past support for single-payer health care. You’ve also supported a host of other liberal policies….You’ve also donated to several Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton included, and Nancy Pelosi. You explained away those donations saying you did that to get business-related favors. And you said recently, quote, “When you give, they do whatever the hell you want them to do.”

TRUMP: You’d better believe it.

BAIER: — they do?

TRUMP: If I ask them, if I need them, you know, most of the people on this stage I’ve given to, just so you understand, a lot of money.

TRUMP:  I will tell you that our system is broken. I gave to many people, before this, before two months ago, I was a businessman. I give to everybody. When they call, I give. And do you know what? When I need something from them two years later, three years later, I call them, they are there for me. And that’s a broken system.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What did you get from Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi?

TRUMP: Well, I’ll tell you what, with Hillary Clinton, I said be at my wedding and she came to my wedding. You know why?

She didn’t have a choice because I gave. I gave to a foundation that, frankly, that foundation is supposed to do good. I didn’t know her money would be used on private jets going all over the world. It was.

BAIER: Hold on…..We’re going to — we’re going to move on.” (Transcript: Read the Full Text of the Primetime Republican Debate, Time)

Wonderful stuff. The Casino magnate “revealed the appalling truth about the American political system, that the big money guys like Trump own the whole crooked contraption lock, stock, and barrel, and that, the nation’s fake political leaders do whatever they’re told to do. ”

Also worth reading on Counterpunch is Andrew Levine’s How Pathetic! Why Donald Trump May be the Best Thing Going, who quips, “elections are more like elimination contests on reality television shows than horse races. The race does not go to the swiftest; it goes to the last pathetic character left on the island”.  He also reminds us that Nader was the first to warn everyone that Trump was going to be a huge problem and that if he is not gone by Labor Day that the Repblicans are in deep shit.

But the best piece we found yet is “From Trump on Down, the Republicans Can’t Be Serious” by Paul Krugman in the New York Times, where he points out the rest of the Republican fold is equally insane : “For while it’s true that Mr. Trump is, fundamentally, an absurd figure, so are his rivals. If you pay attention to what any one of them is actually saying, as opposed to how he says it, you discover incoherence and extremism every bit as bad as anything Mr. Trump has to offer. And that’s not an accident: Talking nonsense is what you have to do to get anywhere in today’s Republican Party.”

We think Trump was convinced to run in order to make the other extremist candidates look respectable and viable. But we are probably wrong. For more lovely analysis of last Thursday’s hour long Cialis commercial take a look at Salon’s coverage from the past week. Or just read “The secret history of “cuckservative”: The fetish that became a right-wing rallying cry” by Chauncey DeVega. Beautiful.
